Classroom Management
Patience, kindness, and firmness are critical factors in successful classroom management. We've found that those who are rowing the boat are seldom the ones rocking the boat. For this reason students are involved in decision making processes. Ownership is developed through class meetings that last from five to fifteen minutes each day. Students can place compliments or concerns in our "community concerns can" which are read during class meetings. Compliments are encouraged to detail specific things others have done, rather than focusing on appearances. Concerns that need to be handled in private are handled in private. But those that would be beneficial for the whole class are discussed. The difference between punishments and solutions are clarified and students are involved in creating working solutions for problems that arise in class.
Cooperative Learning was a key component of Mount Logan Discovery. Students were strategically placed into five teams of six to seven students. These teams were shuffled every four to six weeks. Students created names for their teams, worked together on projects, and participated on weekly field trips together. We built in individual and group accountability for collaborative projects.
