Do MATH and YOU can do ANYTHING!
We’re gearing up for our annual MLMC Conference, featuring Dr. Ivan Cheng as our keynote speaker.
Join us for a day of learning, sharing, and connection!
Keynote Speaker
Dr. Ivan Cheng
Ivan is currently a professor of math education at CSU Northridge. As one of the first teachers to get National Board certification in Los Angeles, he has taught for over 23 years at both the middle school and high school level (which makes him reeeally old). His passion is empowering teachers to make math engaging and accessible for all their students, especially those that have been unsuccessful in the past. Ivan has presented at conferences and workshops all over the country (which means he has collected lots of airline and hotel points). In his “spare” time, he enjoys camping with his family and friends at Burney Falls, and engaging in deep conversations around the fire pit (preferably with a glass of wine). And for fun, he actually likes to create math activities that guide sense-making for students. And, oh, did you know he really likes wine?
Over thirty years ago, while attending a conference in the Redding area, Dr. William (Bill) Fisher of CSU, Chico, was struck by the idea that northern California deserved its own chapter representing professional groups such as NCTM and CMC. Dr. Fisher went to work contacting fellow mathematicians he thought might be interested in forming the group and after extensive research on NCTM guidelines, a formal charter was drawn up and the Mount Lassen Math Council was born.
When planning the focus of the Council, it was agreed that an annual conference would be held to support the efforts of teachers seeking to improve instruction in their classrooms. The annual conference is held alternately between Chico and Redding. Each year the focus has remained the same: to provide educators a local conference at which to gather new information and innovative ideas from speakers with expertise in mathematics content and pedagogy.
Today the Mount Lassen Math Council is still going strong with over 200 members. It is located in the northernmost part of California and encompasses the nine rural counties known as Region 2, servicing Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, and Trinity.
Over the years we have had many amazing keynote speakers at our annual conference. Speakers such as Jo Boaler, John Stevens, Andrew Stadel, Cathy Humphreys, Dan Meyer, David Foster, Steve Wyborney, John Sangiovanni and Peter Liljedahl to name a few. Teachers can earn hours toward the 15 hours needed to obtain a unit of credit by attending the conference. This unit of credit is available through CSU Chico. We hope you will join us at this amazing and inexpensive conference.
