After careful consideration, prayer, and reflection, the Carmelite Sisters have made the decision to close Mount Carmel Retirement Residence in St. Catharines (78 Yates Street) as of February 15, 2027.
This was a difficult decision to make as the Carmelite Sisters have dedicated their lives to service and have cared for seniors in the Niagara region since 1920. They have now reached a stage in their lives where they can no longer manage Mount Carmel and oversee its operations.
Over the coming months, we will be focused on supporting residents and staff as they navigate this next chapter, and continuing to provide residents with a safe, caring, and comfortable home until the residence closes.
We are deeply grateful to the residents, staff, and community partners who have been part of Mount Carmel’s long history of faith, service, and compassionate care and we will continue to honour that legacy in the months ahead.

Mount Carmel Retirement Residence, located in St. Catharines, Ontario on scenic Yates Street, is a beautiful and affordable fifty room retirement facility. We provide exceptional care in a community environment. Located near Montebello Park and close to public transportation, this non-profit facility has been operated by the Carmelite Sisters religious Order since 1920. Although the original residence is gone, the caring, familial atmosphere instituted by our foundress, Mother Maria Teresa, remains. The sisters continue to be engaged in key positions in the Home, and, aided by our staff and volunteers, continue the tradition of serving the needs of the senior community in the Niagara Region. Although the Carmelites are a Roman Catholic order, we welcome all Christian denominations and other faiths.
