Frequent Asked Questions

Q. What levels of competition are available?

A. MYSA offers a for-fun “recreational” soccer league. For more competitive “travel” soccer, there are several local clubs (such as Cantolao, Lower Valley, WYSC, etc.,) who offer tryouts for their travel teams.

Q. How are MYSA Recreational soccer teams formed?

A. Rec teams from U-5 through U8 are co-ed. U5 teams are formed geographically; U6 teams are formed by a coaches’ draft following a play-day evaluation; U7 and U8 teams tend to stay intact from the previous year. Teams from age U9 through U18 are single gender teams. U9 teams are formed by a coaches’ draft; U10 through U18 teams tend to stay intact from the previous year. However, if the number of teams or coaches in a particular age group makes team formation problematic for that division, then a coaches’ draft can be held to form the teams.

Q. Can my child play up or down an age group?

A. No player may play down an age group. Requests to play up an age group are decided on a case by case basis, and these requests should be directed to the MYSA Board of Directors.

Q. Where are games and practices held?

A. For U5 through U8 Rec teams, all games and practices are held on Mountain Top fields, including fields at Dorrance Township Park, Fairview Memorial Park, Rice Township Park, Christ United Methodist Church, and the MYSA Soccerplex on Church Road. The MYSA Soccerplex is reserved primarily for games rather than practices, to help maintain the playing surfaces there. Practices are normally held on the area’s several municipal fields. U9 through U18 Rec teams participate in the Wyoming Valley Soccer League. They play their “home” games at the MYSA Soccerplex. Their “away” games are played in communities like Back Mountain, Pittston, Plains, Wilkes Barre, Bear Creek, etc.

Q. When do we start to practice and play games?

A. Practices usually begin around the first of August. League games begin later in August. A typical schedule would include 1 or 2 practices and one game each week. There might be an additional weekday scrimmage for each team, for ages U9 and older, at the Soccerplex.

Q. How will I find out my child’s team placement and practice/game schedule?

A. Your child’s coach will contact you with this information as soon as the teams in your age group are formed and finalized. This usually happens before the end of July.

Q. What about requesting a particular coach or team?

A. A coach or assistant coach is assured of being matched up with his or her own child. Any player can request to avoid a particular coach, but requests to join a particular teams are not usually honored in our Rec program. Players who want to play on a particular team can tryout for a local travel team.

Q. What does my registration fee include?

A. A lot! It covers all the costs associated with running the league (field maintenance, building maintenance, line paint, balls, referee fees, etc.) plus a full uniform (shirt, socks and shorts) plus insurance (through EPYSA), fees payable to WVSL, and a full schedule of practices and games.

Q. What does my fund raising fee cover?

A. For years, our fund raising fees have been dedicated to paying off the costs of acquiring the land for the MYSA Soccerplex, and capital costs associated with building the fields, the stormwater management systems, and the Soccerplex Concession building. Fund raising also supports other capital equipment costs like the purchase of goals, nets, corner flags, etc.

Q. Who can I contact if I have a question?

A. Feel free to write to MYSA at PO Box 102, Mountain Top, PA 18707. Or email a Board member, selecting the board member whose position seems most appropriate for your question or comment. (See contact list.) Or attend one of our monthly Board meetings, which are open to all coaches and parents. Board meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM, usually at the Crestwood Senior High School library.
