The Ask a Friend Initiative is a community‑driven movement created to make one simple action a habit: checking in on the people you care about. Built by young leaders in Southwest Virginia, the initiative encourages students, families, and neighbors to pause, reach out, and ask a friend how they’re really doing.
At its core, Ask a Friend is about connection, awareness, and early support. You don’t need to be a counselor to make a difference — sometimes all it takes is a single question and a willingness to listen. Through school campaigns, community outreach, youth ambassadors, and practical tools for starting conversations, the initiative works to break stigma and remind people that no one has to face their struggles alone.
Ask a Friend is powered by the belief that small conversations can save lives. When we check in, we show up. When we show up, we strengthen our communities. And when we strengthen our communities, we build a region where every person feels seen, valued, and supported.
