Ecological design
The natural world is miraculous and facing many threats. I want to make sure that the creation of these tiny worlds does not cause harm to the greater world that I love.
Most of our terraria builds come alive in repurposed glass containers. By giving them a new purpose, we not only reduce waste but also the energy required to produce new containers.
While I do purchase new plants from time to time to diversify the collection, most of our plants are propagated on site to decrease carbon emissions due to shipping and to the resources used in greenhouse production.
The moss used in our terraria is ethically and sustainably sourced on our private land and then propagated on site. When collecting moss, I make sure to take a small quantity from a large patch and then move on, ensuring that the gap I created grows in and doesn't reduce the plant's ability to spread and thrive in future. Moss is then propagated indoors in order to lessen pressure on the forest ecosystem.
