TISS Mosaic is an annual Festival held under the initiative of Students from North Eastern States of India studying at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, celebrating the diverse cultures of eight North-Eastern States of India with a vision of a peaceful region through a celebration of diversity and unity of different cultures, traditional practices, food, attires and embracing the multi-cultural society in the region and spreading awareness among the other parts of India through various cultural activities and Academic Panel discussion on issues pertaining to the region.
The North-Eastern part of the country truly represents unity in diversity. Nestled in the eastern Himalayas, this region is abundant in Natural Beauty, Wildlife, Flora and Fauna and its diverse people. The region comprises eight states- Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim. Each of the eight states that form this part of India has its own culture and tradition.
TISS MOSAIC attempts to rediscover North-East India from a negative lens to re-look at the region through a positive lens. For decades, the region North-East has been known for all sorts of conflict, from human rights violations by State Agencies to inter-ethnic conflicts and insurgencies and Counter-insurgency problems. Much has been done on this front, presenting the region as nothing more than a conflict-ridden region, be it in the academic and media. Some literature even presented the region with a distorted notion of the culture and people. The stories of conflicts have been overstated and narrated. This has further alienated the region's people from the rest of India and the intellectuals of mainland India. This leads us further into another problem, wherein the people hailing from the region and going outside the state are also made to believe that there is nothing good in the region but conflicts; this hindered the youth from thinking and re-looking at the region into a new perspective and generate new ideas to come out of the web of conflict in the ground and web of information of the same in the media that has clouded the thinking and psychology of the people from the region.
In this context, the Mosaic festival has become a paramount platform for young academicians, researchers, student communities and youth from the region to embrace and celebrate the beauty of multi-culture, sharing and interchanging among themselves and giving, thereby generating fresh thinking and a new way of re-looking our culture and society from different lenses, from conflicts to a beautiful multi-cultural society, from band and strikes to re-emphasizing the rich biodiversity, the scenic beauty of the region, and the beautiful difficulties and folklore.
TISS Mosaic aim to achieve two broad objectives:
Creating a platform for the youth to rethink the region’s positive aspects and building conditions for peaceful co-existence through celebrating together and embracing diversity and Unity in the different cultures, traditional practices, foods and dresses
Giving new thinking on the region to the rest of the Country, that the region is not all about conflicts, but much more than the projected images, it has multiple realities, and the reality of the region has much better things to offer through the beauty of culture, scenic beauty of the land, rich biodiversity and rich histories and engaged with the positive aspect of the region.
