I will advocate for occupational therapy within an interdisciplinary team and provide education at KUMC’s Huntington’s Disease clinic to support patient and caregiver care.
This questionnaire was utilized to gain insight into meaningful occupations to support educational handouts being created. It additional included a need identification to ensure that handouts being created for those topics were perceived as meaningful. The questionnaire was completed by the first three clients who came into the clinic.
This needs assessment summary discusses the purpose of creating the needs assessment questionnaire, how data was obtained, the results of the questionnaire, and the interpretation of the results.
The pre-assessment questionnaire was used to gain a baseline in knowledge specific to topics covered through occupational therapy education being provided at the clinic. It contains two yes/no questions and a Likert scale for the remaining eight questions, with 1 being not at all and 5 being extremely. This questionnaire was given to the client before receiving occupational therapy education.
The post-assessment questionnaire was used evaluate changes in knowledge specific to topics covered through occupational therapy education being provided at the clinic. It contains two yes/no questions and a Likert scale for the remaining eight questions, with 1 being not at all and 5 being extremely. This questionnaire was given to the client after receiving occupational therapy education.
The pre-and post-assessment summary discusses the questionnaires, participants, data analysis, results, and implications. It was created and implemented to evaluate the effectiveness and benefits of occupational therapy education being provided.
The educational handouts were created on a variety of topics that include adaptive equipment, activities of daily living, caregiver support, communication, driving, leisure, meal times, memory strategies, occupational therapy, physical activity, routine, safety, sleep, and work participation. Topics were chosen based on clinic needs and supported by the needs assessment questionnaire. Handouts were client-centered based on client and family needs as identified by general screening questions. These needs were discussed with a licensed and practicing occupational therapist in the state of Kansas prior to providing education.
Home exercise programs were created for fine motor coordination, upper extremities, lower extremities, and balance. These home exercise programs were created to supplement the physical activity educational handout.
The patient and family resource was created to provide families with a variety of resources to further support them as this was identified as a need from the clinic. It was also created to send to occupational therapists who have not worked with a Huntington's Disease diagnosis to provide foundational knowledge for the disease and common intervention strategies.
The clinic manual was created to supplement the educational handouts for clinic staff use and includes all material created for the clinic. The manual includes its purpose, occupational therapy values, theories used to ground the project, and briefly discusses client-centered. It also compiles all educational handouts with additional information for clinic understanding, home exercise programs, and patient and family resource. It also additionally includes dissemination of material for clinic understanding of material purposes.
CLARION National Case Competition is a student-driven, interprofessional competition that consists of three to four people of various professions who conduct a root-cause analysis based on a case provided and develop a solution proposal. This competition is through the University of Minnesota and includes schools from across the country. The case was based on finding a solution to radical belonging within M Health Fairview, which is a healthcare system based in the state of Minnesota. The team consisted of two occupational therapy students, one nursing student, and one physician assistant student. The presentation and supplemental material presented for the case are provided.
Data utilized for deliverables were obtained from scholarly resources, continuing education, and the Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s website. Needs assessment and pre and post-assessment responses were provided by clients and/or caregivers depending on disease progression. Occupational therapy services were changed to strictly education to meet the legal requirements of a capstone student. This included evaluation of clients using general screening questions to gain insight into challenging occupations that were directly related to volition, habituation, performance, and environmental subsystem barriers. This allowed for a holistic and client-centered approach by choosing what educational handouts would best support the family in the current disease progression and symptoms. This then was reviewed with a practicing and licensed occupational therapist prior to reviewing educational handouts with the client. The educational handouts focused on addressing the various subsystems based on the Model of Human Occupation as well as compensatory strategies that are aligned with the Rehabilitative frame of reference.
This objective allowed me to gain further insight into occupational therapy’s role when supporting families affected by Huntington’s Disease (HD) through education. Interacting with the families visiting the HD clinic demonstrated the need to be able to adapt the educational handouts to meet their needs currently as well as provide education to support them in the future. This allowed me to recognize the importance of conducting the general screening questions in order to identify areas of need for each individual family. Furthermore, the clinic provides education and resources but identified the need of providing families with access to additional resources to further support them through the disease progression. While creating the patient and family educational resource, I realized how hard it is to find credible resources in order to access useful education in order to assist in the disease progression. This resource is able to be sent to families visiting the HD clinic to further support them by having these resources readily available.
