I will gain an understanding of occupational therapy’s role in an interdisciplinary Huntington’s Disease clinic.
To gain further insight into occupational therapy's role within an interdisciplinary HD team, I observed an occupational therapist for a clinic day at Ochsner Health in New Orleans, LA via Zoom.
The Unified Huntington Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) is utilized to assess four domains of clinical performance and capacity. I worked with the clinic coordinator to understand the use of the UHDRS and how this directs patient care in the clinic.
I was able to gain insight into the role and benefits of having an occupational therapist within an interdisciplinary team. I was able to observe the evaluation methods of an occupational therapist in a Huntington's Disease (HD) clinic as well as gain further insight into the education provided during a typical HD clinic visit. Additionally, I was able to gain a foundational understanding of the use of the UHDRS during HD clinic visits at KUMC and was able to further expand my understanding by asking the clinic coordinator follow-up questions.
This objective helped me create educational handouts that would be most valuable for clients and family members affected by Huntington’s Disease. I was also able to identify which educational handouts would be most useful as well as client-centered based on results of the UHDRS, specifically with responses to the functional capacity section as this was directly related to activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living.
