Wednesday of Sale Week
Volunteer Shopping Hours: 3 pm to 6 pm
Consignor Shopping Hours: 4 pm to 6 pm
Sorter - Sorters organize clothing by size, gender, and type and move items from the drop off bay to their designated location. They work during drop-off appointment times all day Monday, Tuesday, and until noon on Wednesday.
Quality Control Check volunteer - Volunteers working as "quality control check" are responsible for checking that all items meet our guidelines for the sale. They work directly at the drop off entry point and meet the sellers as they drop their items off. They are responsible for turning items away that don't meet our standards. The quality control check volunteer should be assertive and willing to explain why items are not appropriate. They work during drop-off appointment times all day Monday, Tuesday, and until noon on Wednesday.
Floor Personnel (Toys) - Floor personnel working in the "Toy" room walk around during the sale monitoring that children are not playing on or with the toys. The volunteer should continually organize the toys in a manner that keeps everything neat and tidy. Floor personnel in the toy room should ensure that toy sets are not pulled apart and that items are not removed from their packaging.
Floor Personnel (Books) - Floor personnel working in the "Books" area ensure that books are displayed in an organized manner so that customers can easily browse through our selection. Books should be separated into "Parenting" and children's books sections. There may also be arts and crafts, puzzles, etc. in this area. It is floor personnel's responsibility to ensure that puzzle pieces and crafts remain in their original packaging.
Floor Personnel (Clothing) - Floor personnel working in the large clothing room should constantly monitor the specified area to make sure no items have fallen on the floor, to ensure that customers are not opening up packaging, and to restock items that customers discard.
Security (Front door / Floor) - Security detail involves one of two jobs: check out or floor. Both wear black t-shirts that say "SECURITY" really big in white across the chest. This job is designed to deter theft. The checkout security person stands at the exit and makes sure that everyone leaving with merchandise has a red "PAID" stamp on one of their tags. The cashier will stamp a tag at checkout. The other security personnel will walk around the large rooms (toy room and main floor) making sure that people aren't opening up packaging or removing items. On Thursday, we also have a police officer present to handle any other concerns.
Cashier - The cashier checks out all customers. This includes counting the cash drawer, scanning items, taking cash, and giving customers their change. They also stamp at least one and ALL large items with the red "PAID" stamp. Training is provided 10 minutes before shift. A cashier shift will be very busy on Thursday, slow but steady on Friday, and busy early on Saturday and then slowly tapering off. Cashiers that choose to work Thursday should be prepared for a very busy day.
Cashier Helper - The cashier helper takes all hangers off the clothing and counts items, putting the merchandise in piles of ten. The cashier helper must count accurately, as the number of items must be entered correctly into the computer before the sale can be completed.
Set UP - Volunteers that sign up for set up should be able to use basic power tools, such as a drill. It is very helpful if volunteers bring their own power drill. There is often heavy lifting involved, as part of the job involves loading wood and large metal poles onto the U-Haul truck, unloading them at the armory, and helping to install the racks.
Check Out Specialist - A check out specialist checks consignors out as they are leaving with their unsold / pulled items. ALL items should be checked (by seller number) to verify that the consignor is taking home ONLY their own items. At this time, the checkout specialist also verifies the consignor volunteer hours and initials that the hours have been tallied correctly.
Break DOWN - Break down includes removing all tables, cleaning all tables, vacuuming, and breaking down the racks. Volunteers that sign up for this shift should be willing to work hard and fast and should be willing to stay until the job has been completed. They should have a working knowledge of basic power tools, such as a drill. Heavy lifting is involved, so volunteers doing this job should be in good physical condition. Volunteers that sign up for this shift will also assist in loading the UHaul truck and should be able to drive to meet the Uhaul at the storage unit to help unload.
