About Google's Fuchsia OS

Following the 2019 Google IO this article by theverge ‘lifts the lid’ a little on what Google see as being the rationale of their new OS. Apparently it is viewed more as a testing ground for new OS concepts [across a diverse hardware spectrum] than the previously speculated merging of Android and ChromeOS.

This TechRadar document is updated whenever their team come across regarding what is seen as [but as yet not confirmed] Google's planned cross platform operating system that takes the best from Android and Chrome OS to provide a consistent user experience regardless of what physical hardware is being used.

These rumours are further supported by this Wikipedia entry that is also updated as more information becomes available.

Camera : Quick Video

Your next on-the-go moment could make use of video, whether it's just snagging a quick clip of a key moment somewhere or capturing something more significant.

Whatever the case may be, your Pixel phone has a super-fast shortcut for capturing videos on the fly without having to poke around on your screen or mess with any time-wasting mode changing. You can even save still photos from your video clip — win-win !

The trick is to simply open your camera and then press and hold the big shutter button — the same button you'd press to take a picture — and your phone will immediately start recording a video and then keep recording until you let go.

Once your video's recorded, you can open it by tapping the small circular preview right there in the Camera app or by finding its thumbnail in Google Photos. Once open, swipe up on the screen to see every available still shot that you can extract from the video and save as a regular photo.

On the Pixel 3 and higher, you'll also see an option for "recommended shots". These are the specific stills that Google's algorithms identify as being the best of the bunch. You can pick any of those (or pick whatever still you prefer) and then export it from that same area.

Chrome Browser Extensions : Customise Away

There are many extensions available for the Chrome browser, from the Chrome Web Store, that extend the functionality available - you can browse what is available and download anything you fancy to try it out. If you do not like what you see the extensions are easily removed. As a starter you could check out two old favourites for making Gmail better - these are called Gmail Tabs and Simplify Gmail.

Chrome Browser Extensions : PIP {Picture In Picture} Feature

The Chrome Extension for 'Picture In Picture' mode when looking at videos etc. can be downloaded and installed from here.

5. Gmail will confirm by saying, "Your contacts list will be restored back to how it was on [date you chose @ timeframe]. It may take some time for these changes to show up on your device."

Drive Documents : How You Can Learn More

Reading helps, but sometimes a video can help more. For example if you need to replace a door knob, and the manufacturer's written instructions look complicated, try searching YouTube for "how to replace door knob".

You will probably get several videos showing the entire process that will help you get the job done in a few minutes without a load of stress.

Google also offers documentation in a variety of places for you can learn more.

Drive Documents : How You Can Use Your Voice

Ensure your microphone is working then open a Google Doc in your web browser.

Choose Tools > Voice Typing (or press Ctrl+Shift+S) to enable Voice Typing.

Now you simply talk clearly and Google Docs uses voice typing to display your words on screen.

Voice typing also understands many editing instructions. With voice commands, you can move the cursor within the document; select, cut, copy, paste, format, and delete text.

For the complete list of options, say "See all voice commands" while voice typing is active.

Drive Documents : Managing Storage Space

In the days of desktop computing when you saved a document it took up space on your system's hard drive.

But files in Google formats, such as a Google Doc, Sheet, Slide, or Drawing, don't count toward your storage quota on Google Drive. You can create as many Google-native files as you like. In other words a Google Doc won't use up your storage space.

When you store a Microsoft Office document, PDF, or video to Google Drive, the file counts against your storage limit.

To save space, you can convert Office files into native Google formats when you upload your files to Google Drive.

That way, these files won't count against your total available Google Drive storage space.

Drive Documents : Merging two, or more, accounts

It is possible to own more than one Google Account, and for various reasons this can be convenient for keeping your information separate.

However if you find that you have data stored across accounts then you may decide that you want to combine some, or all, of it into just one of your accounts. Unfortunately Google does not provide a 'merge' option, but it is possible to effect a 'merge' with a little effort.

Click here to read this HowToGeek article that explains what you need to do.

Drive Documents : Recovering Deleted Files

When you remove a file from Google Drive, it moves into Trash — where it will stay until you empty the trash.

You can restore these files — so long as you haven't emptied the trash.

To move a file out of trash, go to drive.google.com, then choose Trash from the left menu. Locate the file (or folder) you want to recover, select it, then choose "Restore".

Drive Documents : Sharing Your Work

Google gives you control over the Share settings for each document you create.

When viewing the document on the web, select the Share button, and then choose "Advanced". You can then add individual access (i.e. add a person's email address, including non-Gmail accounts) or adjust link sharing settings (i.e. choose "Change..." under the document's "Who has access" settings).

You can choose options that range from "Public on the web" to "Specific people" to entirely private.

Note care should be taken with the latter as it makes it appear that a file exists in two locations at the same time when in fact there is only a single instance of the file, meaning that if it is deleted at either location it will be removed from both at the same time.

Gmail : Send large attachments via Google Drive

There's a little Drive icon at the bottom of Gmail's compose window that lets you attach files you have stored in Drive or to simply send a link.

For Google Drive formats -- Docs, Sheets, Slides and so on -- your only option is to send a link to the file.

For other file types -- PDFs, Word docs, images -- you have the option of sending them as an attachment or a Drive link, which lets you share files larger than Gmail's 25MB size limit for attachments

Google Lens & Pixel Smartphones

Some of these features work on non-Pixel phones as, and if, Google decides to open them up to other devices.

Using your Pixel phone you can get to Lens right from your device's camera. Just press your phone's power button twice to open the camera, then aim your phone at whatever it is you want Lens to process. Non Pixel users can download Google Lens here.

Sometimes, Lens and the Camera app may even get a step ahead of you and preemptively offer a link to a website, email address, or physical address listed on the item before you do a thing.

To get the full Lens experience, though, what you'll do is touch and hold your finger to the viewfinder area [the big, open space where the image appears] and you'll see a coloured circle appear. After a second or so you'll be taken to an interactive Lens analysis of the image's contents.

Depending on what's present Lens might offer to help you add the information as a contact, email an address mentioned on the material, or open a website listed on the document. It'll also give you some other single-tap options for related content.

If you want to take manual actions on some of the text just press and hold your finger to the words within your image. This will pull up a standard Android text selector for you to select text from the physical object as if it were just regular text on your phone. You can then copy the text, search Google for it, or take other available actions.

What's Google Up To ?

11/03/2021 "A bit of history and speculation"

Click here to see an article at medium.com that I’d highly recommend you spend 10 minutes or so to read through.

N.B. You may have to register at the site to get access but this is easily done by simply authorising use via your Google Account.

The narrative goes through the history of ChromeOS, Android, Fuschia etc. and hints at where Google may be heading.

Once you’ve read it I challenge you to have a wee think about your own needs and assess your own opinion.

If you are anything like me you’ll be thinking “I can’t wait to get into all of this new stuff” - “bring it on” !
