The EJI was founded in 1989 in Montgomery, Alabama by public interest lawyer, Bryan Stevenson. A non-profit organization, the EJI is committed to:
-stopping mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States,
-challenging racial and economic injustice, and
-protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in the United States.
In addition to providing legal representation for marginalized individuals, the EJI is working to change how we discuss racial injustice in the United States by forcing us to confront our country's racist history.
