Graduate Students

Patrick Lee

Patrick graduated the Computational Linguistics program in 2023. He works as a Language Engineer on Amazon Web Services's HealthScribe team and as a project lead on the NLP Lab's euphemism research team. Prior to this, he received a B.S. in Computer Science and Linguistics from Rutgers University. His hobbies include language learning, basketball, making music and playing strategy games.

Julia Sammartino

Julia Sammartino is a second year student in the M.S. in Computational Linguistics program. She graduated from the Ohio State University in 2022 with a B.S. in Biological Mathematics with a minor in Statistics and a focus in medical applications. Currently, she is a part of the NLP lab here at MSU and works with Dr Feldman on the euphemisms project. She is interested in AI and machine learning implementation for the improvement of healthcare. Outside of school and work, Julia also enjoys journaling, crochet, and reading.

Rachel Hamelburg

Rachel is a second-year student in the M.S. Computational Linguistics Program. She holds a B.A. in Linguistics, Spanish, and Comparative Literature from the University of Rochester. Her segue into computational linguistics was inspired by the data-driven nature of her linguistics degree and completing a focus area in computational problem solving for the social sciences. Her research interests intersect AI, human cognition, and linguistics, focusing particularly on generative commonsense reasoning and computational modeling of language acquisition. Rachel is fascinated by the ongoing discourse on humanizing AI and enjoys exploring what distinguishes or unifies human intelligence and machine capabilities. In her free time, she enjoys going on hikes, playing piano, and reading.

Hasan Can Biyik

Hasan Can is a student in the M.S. in Computational Linguistics program. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Marmara University in Translation and Interpreting. Currently, he works as a graduate assistant to Dr. Feldman on euphemism research, specifically focusing on the Turkish language. Hasan is interested in classification tasks in NLP, Second Language Acquisition, and language teaching. Additionally, he explores cognitive processes that occur in the brain during interpretation. After completing his graduate studies, Hasan Can aims to pursue a PhD. Besides his academic interests, he enjoys photography, watercolor painting, cinema, and psychology.

Thomas Hicks

Thomas is a second-year student in the M.S. in Computational Linguistics program. He graduated from Rutgers University with a B.A. in English and a minor in Philosophy. Thomas is interested in the structural elements of language composition and interpretation. His research interests include understanding the automated segmentation of grammatical units for various styles of communicative data. Outside of academics, Thomas is an avid music-listener and performer, enjoys traveling and exploring local events and venues, and has a keen interest in world cultures, literatures, and languages.

Josh Stephenson

Josh is finishing their MS in CL this fall (2024). They have a BS in Economics from Arizona State University, where they focused their research on the effects of artificial intelligence and robotics on the labor market. Their NLP interests include supervised and unsupervised morphological segmentation and, more generally, sequence-to-sequence training tasks. In their professional career, Josh has been working with software for longer than they care to admit and has strong opinions about the merits of shell scripting in natural language processing tasks. They also love nature, animals, travel, and billiards.
