Hope Squad
At Monomoy Regional High School, students are proving that small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Hope Squad, a peer-led suicide prevention and mental health awareness group, has become a beacon of positivity and connection within the school community. Hope Squad members are trained to recognize warning signs of emotional distress, offer support, and connect peers with trusted adults or resources. The program is built on the belief that students often feel more comfortable confiding in their peers, making it uniquely effective in fostering a supportive environment. The impact of the Squad at MRHS goes beyond individual interactions. By promoting open conversations about mental health and reducing stigma, the group creates a culture where students feel safe expressing their feelings and seeking help. Hope Squad also organizes events, such as Hope Week and stress-reducing activities, to promote wellness throughout the school. Just recently, the Monomoy Hope Squad launched an Instagram, expanding their mission into the online space and ensuring that sharing information about the importance of mental health and ending stigmas around suicide is not only easily done, but easily seen. If there is one thing to remember, it is this quote from our Squad's president Jason Elhilow: "You are not alone here at MRHS. Just find one of our members wearing a Hope Squad shirt or an advisor with a Hope Squad label outside their room. No matter what you’re going through, we will listen. We will be that shoulder you can cry on. We will be your friend. Because that is what we’re here for." Visithopesqaud.com to learn more.
