An influential experience that I had during the duration of my time as a student with the Communications Academy, would have to be not putting much thought or rather planning to my video process. The end result of the video was not by an means, good. Starting out in The Communications Academy, I merely had knowledge of holding a camera up and pointing it towards a subject. There is more to just picking up a camera and shooting something, there is the process of storyboarding and accumulating your ideas to create content that people will enjoy watching. Step two is then picking up a camera and shoot a subject or setting based on your storyboard or the shot list that needed to be created before the shooting process. Then there is the editing process, where all the footage is combined into an orderly timeline with music or interviews or voiceovers. When first starting out in The Communications Academy, I had really no knowledge so my content was not the best nor the greatest. Since then, I've taken into account that this is a process I will need take in order to create something visually for a specific audience. I can say now that I do have a thought process when creating videos, I think more about my shots and how I would like my video to look like.
Currently, we've passed the planning phase of the project. We have uploaded our opening shots into Premiere Pro and are actively shooting b-roll that are needed. Due to scheduling issues, we are a little behind than we expected to be at this point. The interviews and voiceovers are being placed according to the storyline or rather timeline that we wish to follow. We have a few sets of music Royalty-Free tracks that fit with the clips we already have placed and any future clips we place. We wish to go for an authentic feel to the film. I've added 6 new clips of a dark street to the folder and 3 clips of surrounding streets in Mexico.
This week I ended writing part one of what was said in Itzel's mom's interview and Itzel and I agreed that it would be best to start with her mom's life in Mexico before she came to the U.S. I marked the time so the clips are easier to find and it's easier to see what we want to put together. We have an issue with the audio in Itzel's mom's b-roll. We were thinking about possibly recording audio that matches the b-roll. We have talked to Ms. Macchia and she said that she'd reach out to us when she sees what's wrong.
This is part two of itzel's mom's interview and the order that we are putting the story in is her life in Mexico before crossing the border was a thought, then the process and the reason for taking the leap towards the U.S. Then how her mom got to where she is today. Some of the clips are still missing audio, Ms. Macchia converted some of the MOV files to Mpg files so we could see if the way the video was exported had caused an error. Turns out Ms. Macchia, Itzel, and I could not hear any audio on all of our own devices so we asked Ms. Macchia if she could send us over our original footage. She's looking into that.
This week I wrote out my dad's Interview, the main one. The idea is that we use the same story order for my dad as we are doing with Itzel's mom which is his life before the U.S, Crossing the border and then his life now. Ms. macchia checked the SD cards but she doesn't have the SD card that holds our original footage so it's likely we might have to record the sounds for the clips that don't have any audio. Itzel and I got onto google meet, we worked on her mom's interview and we didn't have enough information so itzel is going to ask her mom if she could ask a few more questions. I clipped the three new photos we received from itzel's mom which I did not yet upload to the documentary folder.
I wrote out the interview that I took from my dad, it's the side interview with added information. Ms. Macchia contacted the principal to see if she could get into the building for our SD card so we still have the sound issue but we are in contact with Ms. Macchia. I spoke to Ms. Macchia about the translation and software that could help translate it. Itzel said that she would send me the new interview clip from her mom so I'm waiting on that. I'm still actively working with our advisor, I've already received the Mpg files that I needed so we are good on that.
Criticism and feedback on rough draft: Some of the feedback included The title. As recommended by Ms. Macchia, I will be slowing down the time that it takes for the title to get bigger in the intro. Attention was placed on several Jump-Cuts I missed on both interview portions. The video as a whole has not been spaced out evenly, The story has no breaks. Some of the audio sounds like it has been abruptly cut off and the overall audio track has a water dripping sound which I will be replacing with the original separate mic recording. My dad's recording does not transition more like cuts off before it continues the story.
My Senior Capstone Project #2 is a "cover" or rather "thumbnail" of the video. I am currently still brainstorming some ideas for it. This project relates to my overall theme of immigration since I am trying to capture the stories of two different people with two different experiences. I have come up with 3 positive outlines, I am still unsure of what medium I would like to it in such as painting, water color, pencil, or digitally.

I've decided to go with option 3 with both the Mexico and Jersey City skylines. I also added the flags to show which is which. I will be editing it on Fresco. My original idea to put both skylines half and half with it's flag in the picture. I'm still trying to figure out what font I want to use for the title, " A Place Called Home."
This is my draft of Project 2 for the cover of the documentary. I combined both images of the Jersey City skyline and the Mexico City skyline. I found a font that would fit with the image I am going for. I might put the credits at the bottom of the image, something like "Produced and Directed by Itezel Sanchez and Monica Ramirez." and "Edited by Monica Ramirez"
This is my final draft of the Capstone Project #2. At first I wanted to add more like "Edited by" or "Directed by" but this is going to be the main cover for the documentary so I didn't want to add too much which would be difficult to read. I originally had planned to put the flags but it didn't fit quite right nor did it look natural. I might need to add something that shows that the picture on the left is Mexico city because there is nothing there stating so. I think it's pretty obvious that the right side is Jersey city but it might be interpreted to be NYC. Overall, this will be the cover I will be putting on my documentary.
Over the last 3 years of being in the Communications Academy, I learned so much. Going into the Academy, I didn’t expect much but I’ve certainly learned enough to improve my skills. I learned how to write an article, how to be a reporter and create a newspaper. I learned how to shoot a video and edit it. I learned how to advertise products, and most importantly I learned how important teamwork is.
This year in particular, creating my first Capstone Project was something that really surprised me because it’s something I didn’t know I was capable of creating. Despite feeling so overwhelmed sometimes and feeling like I was losing time, It’s a project I am really proud of.
I’m not too proud of my other projects but they have shown how much I have improved. There may have been times where I have failed to produce the content I was aiming for but I have exceeded my expectations in recent projects.
Given a second chance, I would think over my goal and ideas before going through the process of storyboarding or the creative process. I’d change the locations, I’d change the editing to make it more smooth rather than the rough jump cuts. I’d most likely stop overthinking the subject and choose one idea or shot to focus on. I would be more open to new ideas and taking more interviews. Personally, I’m glad that I was able to experience all of these other creative branches and that I had the opportunity to create and experiment with cameras, Final Cut Pro, and a lot of other platforms.
