8 WEEKS / MONDAYS / SEP. 8 - OCT. 27 / 5:30PM-7:30PM / AGES 12+ / $320
During this 8 week course, students 12+ will learn fundamental skills for both drawing and painting, exploring a variety of different mediums. The first two weeks of this workshop will focus on drawing and creating value with pencil. In the subsequent weeks, students will explore painting with watercolor and acrylic paint. Each week will center around a different master artist, and students are encouraged to recreate one of the artist’s works or emulate the artist’s style with a new subject. Every class incorporates the MONART drawing method—a guided method for drawing developed by artist Mona Brooks—as well as other drawing and painting techniques through a guided tutorial by Ms. Kayla. Students will learn about many different styles and artistic movements, the main differences between watercolor and acrylic paint, strategies for building value, texture, and color with different mediums, and how to develop a personal painting practice at home.

Ms. Kayla is a professional painter and teaching artist from New York City. She currently teaches for MONART School of the Arts and The Old Globe Theatre, and has experience teaching a wide range of age groups and artistic mediums. Her painting style is vibrant, textured, and abstract. She primarily uses oil paint and an impasto palette knife technique– although she enjoys working with watercolor, acrylic, and other mediums as well. She is most inspired by impressionist artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Mona Edulesco, but she also draws inspiration from nature, music, storytelling and philosophy. She studied Political Science, Sociology and Painting at American University in Washington D.C. and she is passionate about Arts advocacy and Arts education. She loves helping her students develop confidence and curiosity in their own style and unique process. She believes there is room for everyone in the arts and encourages her students to take risks and make art for themselves. Her goal is to guide her students on their own individual creative journeys, and provide a calm, inclusive, non-competitive environment for her students to grow.
