Throughout the development of the AI-Assisted Reimagining of Gyeongbokgung Palace, artificial intelligence played a significant role in supporting the design process. Rather than replacing architectural creativity, AI functioned as a research, visualization, and evaluation tool that assisted different stages of the project.
ChatGPT was used during the early stages of the project to gather information about the historical significance of Gyeongbokgung Palace, traditional Korean architecture, and key cultural elements that define its identity. This research helped establish a strong conceptual foundation and ensured that the design remained connected to its heritage origins.
AI assisted in transforming a simple design idea into a more detailed architectural proposal. Initial prompts generated generic modern buildings with little cultural relevance. Through iterative prompt refinement, the AI helped identify essential architectural characteristics such as traditional roof geometry, courtyard organization, wooden detailing, and symbolic Korean architectural features. This process strengthened the relationship between heritage preservation and contemporary design.
Image-generation tools were used to explore multiple design alternatives rapidly. Several AI-generated concepts were produced, each presenting different interpretations of how traditional Korean architecture could be integrated with modern materials such as glass and steel. This allowed a broader exploration of design possibilities before selecting and refining the final concept.
Although AI significantly accelerated the design process, it demonstrated important limitations throughout the project.
AI was capable of generating visually appealing concepts; however, it often lacked a genuine understanding of cultural meaning and architectural authenticity. Many initial outputs appeared modern and attractive but failed to capture the historical identity and symbolic value of Gyeongbokgung Palace.
Furthermore, AI could not independently determine whether a design proposal appropriately balanced heritage preservation with contemporary functionality. These decisions required critical architectural judgment and cultural awareness that remained dependent on the designer.
Several challenges emerged while integrating AI into the design process:
Early AI-generated concepts often produced conventional modern buildings with minimal connection to Korean architectural heritage. This highlighted the importance of carefully crafted prompts and detailed design instructions.
AI generated numerous design alternatives; however, many contained unrealistic proportions, construction issues, or culturally inaccurate interpretations. Human evaluation was necessary to filter and refine these outputs.
While AI excelled at producing compelling visualizations, some generated images prioritized aesthetics over practical architectural considerations. Additional design review was required to ensure realistic and buildable solutions.
The use of AI in architectural education raises important questions regarding authorship and responsibility.
AI tools contributed to research, visualization, and concept generation, but the final design decisions remained the responsibility of the designer. Acknowledging AI's role ensures academic honesty and transparency.
The project demonstrates that AI should be viewed as a creative assistant rather than a replacement for architects. Critical thinking, cultural understanding, and design judgment remain fundamentally human skills.
Architects are ultimately responsible for the performance, safety, and cultural impact of their designs. While AI can provide suggestions and alternatives, it cannot assume responsibility for real-world architectural outcomes.
The development of this project demonstrated that the strongest architectural outcomes emerge from collaboration between human creativity and artificial intelligence.
AI accelerated historical research, supported concept development, generated design alternatives, and enhanced visualization. However, the processes of selecting, evaluating, refining, and contextualizing these ideas remained entirely dependent on human judgment.
The final proposal illustrates how artificial intelligence can become a powerful design partner while preserving the architect's role as the primary decision-maker. AI expanded the range of possibilities, but it was human interpretation, cultural understanding, and architectural reasoning that transformed those possibilities into a meaningful contemporary reimagining of Gyeongbokgung Palace.
