Research into developing sustainable and efficient processes to produce aviation fuel is extremely challenging and demand great financial investment, time and also human resources. The most recent advances in digitalization and artificial intelligence have high potential and will play a fundamental role in developing research as a means to model and understand complex phenomena, design of experiments, collection and interpretation of large sets of data, and the generation of new knowledge that would be extremely difficult and expensive to obtain through conventional research methods.

The Momentum project developed by the Fuels Conversion Group at ICB-CSIC has as a general objective the training of a qualified postdoctoral researcher into the development and application of digitalization strategies to open a new research line that will position the group at the forefront of scientific research into sustainable fuels. This project will transform the scientific approach to develop new processes or products, such as sustainable aviation biofuels produced through different thermochemical processes such as oils and fats hydrotreating or hydrocracking/hydrosiomerization of Fischer-Tropsch products.
Innovative Nature of the Project
The project is highly innovative as it contemplates the development of machine learning and artificial intelligence models in combination with first principles models, such as thermodynamic laws, kinetcs, material and energy balances, that allow us to gain deep understanding of the materials and processes investigated. With this, we will achieve better capacity of data analysis and interpretation of results with which we expect to accelerate and make experimentation more efficient to enable the progression of thermochemical production of sustainable aviation fuels technology to higher technology readiness levels.
The Momentum program promoted by the CSIC and funded through the EU-Next Generation fund, aims to train and consolidate qualified professionals in strategic science and technology areas to boost and strenghthen CSICs and Spain capacities on research, innovation, entrepreneurship and public-private collaboration. This with the intention to make great contributions towards social and economic progress of the society.
