Frequent use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Lantibiotics are ribosomally synthesized antimicrobial peptides, against which significant resistance has not been observed, making them a promising alternative to antibiotics. We have identified 24 novel lantibiotic gene clusters by screening sequenced genomes on NCBI. One of the cryptic lantibiotic cluster was engineered for production in E. coli, the first two-component lantibiotic Roseocin from an actinomycete.

A two-component lantibiotic Roseocin from Streptomyces filamentosus NRRL 11379. (published in IPO journal Issue No. 50/2019 dated 13.12.2019).
The present invention provides a two-component lantibiotic, Roseocin which can efficiently and effectively act as an antimicrobial agent. The invention also provides for compositions comprising therapeutically effective amount of the two-component lantibiotic and methods for producing biologically active two-component lantibiotic. The invention represents an advancement in the field of antimicrobial agents. The invention can be used as a therapeutic agent for targeting a number of microbial species, especially drug-resistant bacterial species. The two-component lantibiotic has huge potential to be used in agricultural and food industries as well.

Our laboratory is focusing on novel whole-cell and free-enzyme biocatalysts which could be used for the preparation of enantiopure intermediate molecules for the production of industrially important compounds. The novel enzymes encoding genes are mined from the ever-growing microbial genome database by using bioinformatics tools, followed by their cloning, overexpression in E. coli as a host and characterization for their biocatalytic potential.
