Importance of Nutrition
Good nutrition is vital in the growth, brain development, and health of young children. A healthy diet aids in healthy weight, improves the immune system, and helps the child to have key energy to engage in learning and play activities. Proper consumption of vitamins, minerals and macronutrients in the early childhood stage is also associated with cognitive development, emotional regulation as well as physical coordination. The early childhood is a key stage to build a healthy diet and taste of food, which may impact the health throughout the lifetime, including the prevention of such chronic diseases as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease (Health Canada, 2023). Exposing children to a mixture of foods in each group of food ensures that they form a good association with food and promote the use of balanced nutrition as part of routine foods.

Infants
Breast feeding
Childcare infants are breast fed or fed on an iron fortified formula depending on the feeding process that parents have put in place. The teachers should observe safe feeding habits and hold babies when feeding on the bottle to enhance security and attachment. (Health Canada, 2023)
Feed solid food
Infants also start consuming solid food around six months, which includes mashed vegetables and fruits and iron-rich foods. When working with the families, childcare centres add a new food item one at a time and observe allergies.
Toddlers
Planned snack and meal times:
Snacks and meals should be taken frequently by the toddler. Child care centres normally have two snacks and one meal in them making every food offered a representation of various food groups.
There should be a variety of menus and exploration f food:
The fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein foods should be varied in their menus in order to expose the toddlers to the variety of tastes and textures. The exposure aids in breaking negative eating habits among toddlers.(Health Canada, 2023)
Preschool
Balanced childcare menus:
It should be based on the Food Guide in Canada that focuses on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and protein foods in preschool menus at every meal. Typically, food at lunch is in the category of whole-grain sandwiches, vegetables and milk.
Family-style meal routines:
Preschool children are encouraged by educators to serve themselves and routines of taking meals. This helps in the independence, healthy eating, and good interaction in social eating. (Health Canada, 2023)
School-Age
Healthy snack planning:
School-age nutritious snacks include yogurt, fruit, vegetables with hummus, or whole-grain crackers to enhance the energy of children after school.
In the menu planning, healthy choices must be encouraged:
Menus consist of well balanced food and persuade children to eat well balanced meals as they learn about the benefits of balanced diets and nutrition. (Health Canada, 2023).
