Mohd Shahril Ahmad Khiar (IEEE M'12-SM'21) started as a Tutor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) in 2008 right after the completion of his first degree from Korea University, South Korea with Second Class Upper (Honours). In 2012, he was appointed as a Lecturer after been awarded the Master of Electrical Engineering from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). He obtained his Ph.D. degree from University of Southampton in 2019. He was supervised by Professor Paul L. Lewin, the IEEE Fellow and also the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Past President. He was awarded a scholarship from the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, and National Grid Plc. United Kingdom. 

Shahril taught several subjects, contributed to the curriculum development, and was the backbone in the development of the laboratory facilities in the faculty. In conjunction with this, Shahril was awarded UTeM’s Excellent Service Award (APC) in 2013 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2016. Shahril currently serves as the Head of the Doctoral Programme at the Faculty of Technology and Enginnering, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). 

Shahril has been highly involved in research activities within the university. He was appointed as the Head of High Voltage Engineering Research Laboratory (2020-2024), Deputy Head of Energy & Power System (EPS) Research Group (2020-2022), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, UTeM, and Deputy Head of Electrical Asset Condition Monitoring (e-AMCM) Research Group (2023-present), Faculty of Electrical Technology and Engineering, UTeM. He plays a crucial role in sustaining and providing continuous improvement toward the quality of research activities. 

Shahril is also active in IEEE society and currently, he is the IEEE Senior Member. Shahril contributes his expertise in the High Voltage Engineering area locally and worldwide. He has been appointed as the Treasurer of Malaysia High Voltage Network (MyHVnet) (Jan 2021 - Jan 2023) and the Executive Committee Member of IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) Malaysian Chapter (Jan 2021- present). He served as the Session Chair for IEEE 39th Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC 2021). He was appointed as the Organizing Chair for the 4th MyHVnet Colloquium (MyHVnet 2022) and Registration Chair for the 5th MyHVnet Colloquium (MyHVnet 2024). Shahril was awarded UTeM’s Excellent Service Award (APC) for the second time in 2021 due to his great involvement with IEEE. He received a consolation prize for University Academic Award (Emerging Academic Excellent 2021).

Shahril plays a role as the principal researcher and co-researcher of 23 different grants (12 university short-term research grants, 10 research grants from the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, and 1 research grant from IEEE). From this research, he managed to publish 16 international and national conference papers including 32 journal articles (6 in WoS Indexed Journal (5 as Main Authors)). He won 21 medals in innovation competitions at national and international levels, respectively. He also managed to receive 6 Intellectual Properties (IP). 

Shahril is also involved in research consultancy activities. He is the consultant for TerraForm Global Operating (Malaysia). This project involves analyzing the transformer oils for 10 MW solar farm in KLIA. He was involved in giving a series of talks to G2 Energy Ventures Sdn. Bhd. associated with transformer diagnostics for maintenance programs. Shahril has gained a trust from PT Transformator Services Indonesia (TSI) - a company that provides services, maintenance, diagnostics, analysis, and consultation associated with power transformers to utilities in Indonesia such as Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN). He was invited as the honourable speaker for the Transformator Oil Analysis & Dissolved Gas Analysis Interpretation Seminar held at The ALANA Hotel & Conference Center Malioboro, Indonesia. Besides, he was also the coordinator and trainer for GrIP Western Digital (M) Sdn. Bhd.  

Shahril was appointed to serve as the Panel for Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Electrical) With Honours by Engineering Technology Accreditation Council (ETAC) Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) starting from January 2023. He is currently serving as the External Examiner for the Diploma Kejuruteraan Elektrik (Tenaga Hijau) Politeknik Port Dickson. He is also serving as the Advisor for Kolej Komuniti Masjid Tanah Melaka. He was recently recognized as a Professional Engineer (Ir.) by Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
