I am generally interested in studying contexts where firms are under heightened scrutiny by their stakeholders because of irresponsible behavior. In my dissertation, I focused on the stigmatized industries characterized by social contestation, hostile audiences, and distancing between industry insiders and outsiders (Durand & Vergne, 2015). Over the course of three years, I hand-collected various sources of data (e.g., financial, media coverage) in different levels (e.g., firm, CEO, industry) for 212 firms and 421 CEOs in these industries from 1998-2017. In this page, I briefly explain the main components of the database I have so far collected.
The content analyses of media articles about stakeholders' criticism of firms
Background, experience, board-seats, membership in associations, and awardsÂ
Detailed data of the contracts with the government along with the contract misconductsÂ
Gathered by the content analysis of firms' annual reports and CEOs' letters to shareholders
Type and composition of firms' owners, institutional ownership, and common ownership among firms
Detailed data about the hired internal and external lobbyists by firms
All the commercial and military deals by firms in the arms industry
Liberalism or conservatism of the analysts covering firms in the arms industry
