Team School partners with Windward Oʻahu intermediate schools to redesign and implement Hoʻouna Pono in their school. This work includes developing school-specific profiles of substance use risk and resilience, teaching students about research, and facilitating Hoʻouna Pono design sprints.
Kailua Intermediate Risk and Resilience Profile: Our team collected 139 surveys from students at Kailua Intermediate School in April 2025, and over 200 students in November 2025. This survey assessed student 30-day drug use, drug offers, resistance skill use, prosocial activity involvement, and access to drugs. Data from this survey was used to develop a school-specific risk and resilience profile that will be used by both school administration and our project. You can view both this research PSA and thank you video that our team distributed to students at Kailua Intermediate school throughout the data collection process. The risk and resilience profile and infographic are also available and are pending updates from our November 2025 data collection.
Hoʻokahua Summer Program: Our team partnered with Kailua Intermediate School to engage students in their Hoʻokahua summer program (June 9th - June 27th, 2025). We worked with students for 4 sessions. During these sessions, our goal was to expose students to the Hoʻouna Pono substance use prevention program and gather feedback on the applicability to their lives. To do this, we are partnered with Education Incubator and Kailua Intermediate School to deliver two Hoʻouna Pono lessons, teach and engage students in various research activities, and learn more about different methods of storytelling.
Watch this video recording (or slideshow) to learn more about our time with students during the summer program! You can also view the Hoʻokahua Summer Program Workbook for an overview of session topics and activities.
Logo Design Contest: Students from Olomana School and Kailua High School participated in a logo design contest to help us find a logo to represent this work.
Design Sprint: Design sprints are similar to innovation tournaments where participants brainstorm creative ways to address a novel prompt. Our team partnerswith Education Incubator because they have extensive experience with design thinking.
On January 7, 2026, we spent the day with Kailua Intermediate School students to reimagine an e-cigarette lesson from the Hoʻouna Pono substance use prevention program. Through a collaborative feedback process, they brainstormed new lesson approaches to make the program more relevant for Windward Oʻahu youth.
On March 17, 2026, our Student Design Team refined their ideas into working prototypes, and we showcased these ideas to teachers on March 26, 2026. The teachers will pilot the adapted lesson in April 2026.
Hoʻouna Pono Substance Use Prevention Lessons: We are continuing our partnership with Kailua Intermediate School and Education Incubator for the 2025-2026 school year! Students are learning Hoʻouna Pono’s substance use prevention curriculum, and participating in activities and group discussions with opportunities to share their thoughts and experiences. For more information, please see the Mohala Na Pua postcard below addressing some questions families might have about what their keiki’s participation might look like.
Data Collection: We will be collecting post-implementation outcomes for the Risk and Resilience Profile in Quarter 4 after the redesigned Hoʻouna Pono lesson has been delivered in classrooms.
