Agro-Meteorological Field Unit

IMD has set up in the country a network of about 130 Agro-Meteorological Field Units (AMFUs), which are multidisciplinary units responsible for preparation and dissemination of agromet advisories under Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa (GKMS) project. Within this framework, a considerable scope for decreasing the vulnerability of agriculture to increasing weather and climatic variability through weather forecast based agro-advisories has been experienced.

AMFU Modipuram has been running in the Department of Soil Science And Agricultural Chemistry, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel University Of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut since June,2008. AMFU has manned by an Agro-meteorologist who utilize the relevant meteorological products provided by IMD to generate specific advisories for agricultural management for more than 20 nearby  districts and disseminates the same to the farming community.

Expected outcomes:

Increased use of weather based agro-advisories by men and women farmers and reduce the weather parameters based risk in  crop cultivation.

Under Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa project (GKMS), India Meteorological Department, Ministry of Earth Science in collaboration with State Agricultural Universities /Indian Council of Agricultural Research etc. is issuing crop and location specific weather based agro advisories for the benefit of farming community on every Tuesday and Friday and occurrence of extreme weather.
