Each year MFEA recognizes a coworker who provides exceptional customer service, contributes greatly to the tasks at hand, or is a leader when working with other resource management professionals.
The MFEA Forestry Employee of the Year award was developed in 1975-1976 to recognize outstanding forestry employees that were not eligible for the University of Minnesota's Forester of the Year Award which required a degree from the University. Terry Helbig, the Association President at that time, noted, "we had numerous district foresters without a degree." The first award was presented in 1978 to Sandy Christensen an Area Office Manager.
The Buzz Ryan Award is presented to a non-DNR employee to recognize their efforts to conserve natural resources and promotes good forestry work.
This award was originally called "Lifetime Achievement in Forestry". The first award was given in 1984 to Jerry Willet a State Senator from Park Rapids. The second year it was presented to Buzz Ryan. In 1986 it was renamed the Buzz Ryan Award.
