Students began class by reviewing school place and event vocabulary on Quizlet. Then, they took notes on the verb ‘ir’ (to go) and practiced using it to describe where they and others go.

In class, students heard about what I did over the April break and then highlighted sentences that described what they did over break. They then answered questions and interviewed a partner about their activities over break. If time had permitted, we would have ended class by playing Two Truths and a Lie. Mania Musical begins this week! Each week all Spanish students will listen to different current Spanish hits and then vote on their favorites. Class wasn’t held this week due to the snow day. Students were assigned asynchronous work that continued to work with all forms of the verb ser and how to use it to describe food, where people are from, and themselves and their friends.

Students started class by playing a game of Quizlet live to review infinitive verbs. They then partnered up with a classmate and interviewed them to find out what their partner was going to do over vacation. Class ended with a quick quiz. For their asynchronous work students continued to work with the structure that is used to walk about what people are going to do in the future.

This week is Spanish class students read a story using all of the vocabulary they practiced last week. The story is based on a music video which we watched after answering comprehension questions about the story. Students continued to work with the story and its vocabulary in their asynchronous work as well.

This week in Spanish students learned more about the singer Sebastián Yatra and what his life was like growing up in Colombia in the 90s. They also watched a short travel video about things to do in Colombia and then discussed, in Spanish, what they want or don’t want to do if they happen to travel there.

This week in Spanish class students were introduced to a musical group from Colombia called “Bomba Estéreo.” They read and listened to an informative slideshow about the group. After, they practiced with new vocabulary in preparation for a story (based on a music video) we are going to read next week.

This week in Spanish class students listened to the song, “Si quieres, puedes” and then read a story based on the music video by Colombian artist Sebastián Yatra. They ended class by viewing the video. During asynchronous learning, students reviewed the story that goes along with the video as well as read another story about “La Orquesta de Reciclados.” Ask them about it, it’s really interesting!

This week in Spanish class students reviewed telling time as well as learning how to express preferences using the verbs “gustar” and “encantar”. Asynchronous work consisted of practicing using these two verbs and saying how they and others feel about certain activities.

This week in Spanish class students reviewed subject pronouns and how to express desires with the verb “querer.” Asynchronous work consisted of practicing stating what they and others wanted “to do.”

In and out of class, we continued to learn about ekekos. Students did some readings and then answered comprehension questions. Last week students brainstormed ideas about what they would want to include on an ekeko if they had one. This week, they are starting to incorporate that information into a written paragraph. In the 7th grade paragraphs, students will focus on stating what items are on the ekeko and why they like them. 8th graders will add even more sentences, explaining what they want.

Spanish

This week in Spanish class students learned about ekekos, folkloric figurines from Bolivia and Peru. Ask your student to show you a picture of one, and explain the significance of the items that cover it. We also talked about language acquisition and what language learners have in common with sponges. Just like sponges absorb water, our brains absorb language. Language is acquired as we hear and read messages that we can understand. My job is to provide as much comprehensible input, or “water,” as I can during our time together and the students’ job is to listen and read with the intent to understand, or, to be like a sponge and soak it all in!
