Sarah: So this is another thing that is coming soon, it's not there yet, but it's coming. So when we go into Minecraft, very soon we will be able to find these things called dripstones hanging down from ceilings of caves, and growing up from the bottoms of caves, and there's water that drips off of these dripstones, and you could put a cauldron under there and fill it up. So do we want to talk about these?
Kim: Yeah. So those are, I mean, those look very similar to stalactites and stalagmites, which form in caves, so, yeah, it's just water dripping from the ceiling, and as that water gets to the tip, it then will drop onto the ground, and it actually can form sort of a reciprocal cone on the bottom, and what, how I remember which is which, is stalactites has "c," so it's ceiling, for the roof, and then stalagmites has "g" for the ground, so those are the difference between the two, but they are very similar in formation.
Sarah: All right, and again, the final thing that I want to show off that is now in Minecraft, our cave is looking a lot greener and a lot more active and stuff going on.
Kim: There are pointy parts, yeah, I see stalactites and stalagmites.
Sarah: And we have our little picture here, but do we want to talk about these formations now?
Kim: Absolutely we do. So why would we have plants deep down into our mine, that's interesting, right? So what do we need to do to have plants? We need some water, right? So if we have some dripping caves, I don't know if anybody's ever been in a cave before, but sometimes they're not dry, sometimes water gets into these caves, and during that process of dripping, every time the water comes to the point of a rock, sometimes it likes to leave some some minerals behind, so usually calcium carbonate, so calcite, and it forms these sort of cone or cylinder with a little point on them, material as they drop, and they grow, and grow, and grow as that water drips and drips and drips.
Sarah: So you see the water dripping from the points of them?
Kim: I am so impressed with your water dripping. That is amazing.
Sarah: That is my favorite thing about these rocks.
Kim: I think that is super cool. So what happens is, when it's dripping, sometimes so the top part there is forming a rock, but then when the drop hits the ground it, also forms some rock, and so eventually if we have rock growing from the top and rocks growing from the bottom, sometimes they do join. So I see one example of that it forms almost a column of rock. And they have two funny names, and as a geology student we always messed them up, but how I was taught is that the stalagmite has a g in it for ground, and the stalactite has a c in it for ceiling, and that's how I tell the two rocks apart.
Sarah: That is super cool
Each are formed in cave environments, where stalactite grow from the ceiling of the cave, and stalagmite from the floor. In the game, stalactites are referred to "pointed dripstone" and form in cave environments and there is the ability to connect them in the game.
