Sarah: So in Minecraft, we have two kinds of sandstone, we have yellow sandstone and red sandstone, and you can find it out in desert areas. You can also make it by combining sand together.
Kim: Yeah, that's that's very accurate. So just like I mentioned, the sand that you find on the beach, over time as it gets buried into more and more and more sand over top of it, it lithifies, or it turns into a rock, and that's what we're seeing there is the sandstone rock. So that's great.
Sarah: So sometimes when I'm wandering around in Minecraft, I can find a desert temple, and some of the blocks have been carved into what looks like the faces of creepers, which are monsters we can find in Minecraft. And I wanted to point that out because I noticed that we have some things in the Egyptian collections that are made of sandstone as well.
Kim: That's right. So sandstone is very soft, and you can actually, if you had a tool, you could be scratching into the surface, so that's what we're seeing there in the one that you're pointing out is that somebody has obviously drawn in some messages and some images. So that is definitely what we can do with sandstone.
Sandstone is a clastic, sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized quartz or feldspar grains. Sandstones are formed as sand accumulates, then buried, compacted and grains are cemented together. The different colours of sandstone are from different impurities introduced when it is forming.
Red is from iron oxides causing a rust-like colour.
