Sarah: The first thing that we're going to take a look at is in the upper level of the volcano we're going to take a look at some rhyolite, and I know our friends are looking at that and going, "hey, that's just stone!" but it's got its own name now in our world.
Kim: I'm glad it got its own name, that's exciting. So yeah, rhyolite is just another type of volcanic rock. It's not as black basalt, it usually is a little more gray, so I can see why it was given its own special name in Minecraft.
Sarah: Alright, so if I pick this up we can see that now instead of stone it is rhyolite. Perfect. And I notice on this one, the neat thing about the texture on this one is it almost looks like there's little kind of horizontal lines on it. If you look at the picture that's in here which, is another addition, we didn't have pictures in the world before, you can actually see that in the rhyolite sample in our collections I can see those little lines as well, so it kind of matches.
Kim: That's really neat.
Rhyolite is an igneous, extrusive volcanic rock high in silica forming typically in continental arc settings. The flow-banding in this sample is caused by the friction of the viscous magma in contact with a solid rock surface or by compaction, causing flattening and welding of shards and pumice
