Sarah: So here's our first Minecraft rock that we've already looked at a little bit. So this is our granite, and we saw that in the screen share. One of the things that I wanted to ask you about, Kim is that in Minecraft you, can get granite by combining diorite and quartz. So do we want to talk about the science there?
Kim: Sure. So granite is a very common rock found on the surface on Earth, but it's actually an intrusive rock, so it's found deep within our crust of our planet, but it is made up of three major components. It's made up of of quartz, which you can see, which is awesome, and then the feldspars and plagioclase, so those are sort of the big ones there, so yeah, I think that is actually pretty correct, having the diorite rock, plus a little quartz gives you a nice granite, and I love the textures that they used in Minecraft, I think that really shows off what granite looks like.
Granite is an igneous intrusive rock where magma is trapped inside the Earth and cools slowly over many years. Slow cooling means that individual mineral grains have time to form and grow, so intrusive rocks have a coarse-grained texture. Granite is an intrusive rock that has moderate to high quartz and contains feldspar and amphibole. In everyday life, we see granite used as building material and even countertops in our homes.
Quartz is a mineral and not really referred to as an ore. There are many varieties of quartz, and the crystal-clear variety is called rock crystal. You will see another variety, amethyst used in the game. The uses are decorative, building material or combined to create daylight sensors.
