Sarah: How does sand turn into glass by heating it?
Kim: Well, that's a that's a really great question. So, I mean, the components of sand, if you were to go to a beach, the most common mineral that we find on Earth is quartz, so if you were to put, again, a piece of quartz into your, what was your thing called there, Sarah?
Sarah: The blast furnace?
Kim: Sure yeah.
Sarah: Or regular furnace, or the decomposer.
Kim: The decomposer, that's what I was thinking about. So it's actually made up of silica and oxygen, and you can even make sure that I'm correct by checking in your material reducer, make sure that I am right. Yep. So, yeah, so if you were to then heat it up into the furnace you would then get silica.
Sarah: So I'm just gonna really quickly grab some sand.
Kim: Okay.
Sarah: And put that sand in this furnace, and we're gonna see what happens. This takes a little bit longer, because blast furnaces go faster, but if I heat up the sand in the furnace I get some glass.
Kim: Awesome.
Sarah: So, accurate science?
Kim: Accurate science, absolutely.
