Sarah: And emeralds are really popular in Minecraft as currency. So it's the closest we get to money, you can trade it with villagers, and you find them only in certain biomes, like, you really only find them underneath mountains.
Kim: That's very true. So my my five-year-old son told me that he loves me more than emeralds, and now I see why. It's because these are so rare in Minecraft. So, yeah, so you can see the beautiful green in real life, you can see some collection pictures there on the one side, and yeah, these form in very very unique environments. Really, some of the best emeralds come from Colombia, and that's a Columbia emerald, where you see that really, really green color of the of the emerald, so that is the benchmark color for emeralds.
Sarah: Wow.
Sarah: And then up here we can see the other gem that is in the rocks, and we did talk about this before, but we didn't have this example of them in the environment before. So we've got our Minecraft emeralds all throughout the rocks here.
Kim: That's really nice. So I love that you have some of the chemistry on the wall there. So these are these beautiful gemstones that form these really very specific green colour. They are found also in igneous rocks, so that's great that we're finding them down here, and yes, certainly, the beryllium the aluminum silicon all mixed together, but it's really that important chromium or vanadium that makes it that green colour, so I love that you have that all laid out on the wall there.
Sarah: So does this mean that emerald and aquamarine are, like, relatives?
Kim: They are, yes, absolutely they are both green, but emerald certainly has a deeper, deeper green colour. You can see that on the wall there, you've done a great job of getting that deep, deep beautiful green, whereas the aquamarines are more, they call it seafoam green, so kind of more of a turquoise-y colour. So I think you've done a great job of replicating those colors in your world.
Emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl and related to aquamarine. In Minecraft, emerald is more precious than diamond and in real life, this is true. Gem-quality emeralds are more rare than diamond. Emeralds get their colour from elements of chromium and vanadium and are formed in a variety of different rock types. Beryl variety emerald is used primarily as gem material.
