Sarah: Okay, so we have looked at rhyolite which is a nice gray rock that we find on the outside of the volcano, but there's another one that looks a little similar, and that is our andesite. So we can jump into the world in a minute but, we have our slide that shows what it looks like and kind of where it is in the game. And this is one of the interesting things, you can craft andesite by combining diorite and cobblestone, and we've actually taken cobblestone and made it something else, we've made it conglomerate in our game, but that's that's kind of how it works in Minecraft. So do we want to talk about andesite?
Kim: Sure. So andesite is an extrusive volcanic rock, and it is typically sort of a gray color, which I am seeing in your block, which is fantastic. And so the black version is usually basalt, and then there are other rocks that are a lot lighter that sort of mix together to make it sort of not quite black, not white, but sort of gray right in the middle.
Sarah: Cool. All right, let's take a look at it, so we'll jump into the game, and there we go. So this is our rhyolite that we've looked at before, and then this is our andesite over here. So let me grab a piece so we can directly compare them side by side, because they do look very similar, but there are differences. So we've got our andesite on the left, and our rhyolite on the right, and they do look really similar, so I'm wondering, if our friends are curious, what would you say kind of the big difference between andesite and rhyolitie is?
Kim: Well they are very similar so, I'm glad to see in your world that they are looking very similar, but you know they are both extrusive volcanic rocks, they both have sort of a grayish color which is what your blocks look like. One of them, the andesite, has more plagioclase feldspar, whereas the rhyolite has more silica in it, but these are very, very similar kinds of rocks, just with slightly different compositions.
Sarah: Okay, it's kind of like, sometimes I go to the really good chocolate store and they have chocolate from one place and chocolate from a different place, so even though it's the same recipe, they taste different.
Kim: Exactly. So sometimes milk chocolate from some place might taste a little better than the dark chocolate from another place. They're all chocolate at the end of the day and they're all quite tasty.
Sarah: These rocks are really awesome but let's not eat them.
Andesite is an igenous extrusive rock, meaning it extruded from a volcano and formed by cooling. The cooling happens quickly resulting in small mineral grain sizes. These rocks are mainly feldspar and amphibole group minerals with very little quartz and pyroxene. Andesite is not found in the bottom of igloos or caves like in the game.
