Person 1: Are you still feeling dizzy or shaking?
Person 2: Sure, a hard situation to handle by myself. And so you are.
Person 1: Of course. I know that you have heard of a big earthquake in Sagaing and Mandalay.
Person 2: Yes, yes. Really afraid of the earthquake because of the news on FB.
Person 1: So do I. Would you mind if I ask you to state your feelings on that day?
Person 2: It’s okay. Actually, I didn’t realize that it was an earthquake at first. After a big shake, a man shouted
‘Earthquake, go outside*2.’ My mum asked me what he was shouting. While I said I don’t know, another big
one, it took seconds and was strong. At that time, I was listening to the songs on You tube and it paused because
the electricity went out first. That was one of the signals. We thought that was a small one as we had
experienced, and it had done. No, not yet. The third big one came after a few minutes. When the third one came,
we knew it was an earthquake. My Mum was frightened, and held the bookshelf. My dad was coming home
with his cycle and he was in front of the house. And he shouted at us ‘What are you
doing, go outside angrily. ’As for me, I was honestly happy at that time.
Person 1: What? Did you say you were happy?
Person 2: Ahh, yes. That was because I underestimated the earthquake. I was met with an earthquake when I was in
Grade-8. And I had heard about earthquakes, I mean small in the news. So, I supposed that was not that trouble.
And I was happy because I got a new and amazing experience. I was faced with a big earthquake to tell my
younger self. It is ridiculous, right?
Person 1: Umm, ok. I see it. Yes yes, I understand that. We are proud of ourselves that we can face and overcome a
difficult situation.
Person 2: How was yours? Will you share?
Person 1: Ok, mine was not special. You know I live in Myitkyina, and the earthquake is centered on Sagaing and
Mandalay, it was far away from me. But my mum knew that the bed was shaken. That’s all. I didn’t know
anything.
Person 2: Lucky you. But you see news on social media. Right?
Person 1: Yes, I see the news. And it is terrible. The collapsed buildings, people who suffered from the earthquake. I don’t want to see it anymore. But I have to. I am just upset that I couldn’t do anything. I didn’t know much about
Sagaing, but I used to live in Mandalay. So it is sad to see Mandalay is a ruined place. How do you feel about
the losses? You got a real experience, you can express the exact feeling better.
Person 2: It’s true. I have been going to Mandalay and Pyin Oo Lwin all the time. Mandalay is also my hometown.
Fortunately, I was in POL at that time. But most of my relatives live there. And Sagaing is a place where I used
to go in my university days. Historical places are the attraction. I had no idea how big the earthquake was
because the wi-fi lost connection, and the operator didn’t operate well on that day. I needed to change all of the
sims again and aging to get the news. In the evening, I got a proper connection with ATOM. All of my screens
were filled with tragic events. First of all, ‘the sky villa.’ And the news of falling down, stuck people, lots of
historical buildings, and many others. I felt ashamed of what I have said before. I told you that I was happy to
get a new experience. I want to slap myself. My feelings turned into sorrow. My mum got a phone call with my
relatives in Mandalay. It got worse. My aunt and uncle faced nearly death on the roads because the buildings
were falling down near them. They were stuck. My grandpa said ‘Mandalay is gone.’ Can you imagine the
scene of the world falling apart in movies?
Person 1: Umm… I can. Not knowing what to do. Your mind is full of inappropriate feelings.
Uncertainty covers your eyes. The feelings such as sadness, fear, or let it all go are all confused.
Person 2: Exactly.
Person 1: How is your family?
Person 2: Thanks for asking me. We are good. We must move to a safe place. For 2 or 3 days, we must sleep on the road.
Person 1: Because of the earthquake?
Person 2: Yes, the authorities announced with a loud speaker that there is another earthquake or we can’t live inside of our
houses because it’s dangerous.
Person 1: Oh, how did you get there? You said you were in POL.
Person 2: Yes, I did. I must go to Mandalay to bring my grandparents. They are very old, and they are afraid of that more
than us.
Person 1: Did you need any help? What can I do for you?
Person 2: It’s alright. I appreciate your help. I will let you know when I need you.
Person 1: So, let’s take a break.
Person 2: This is not the end. We will see you in the next episode.
