Dr. Md Mehedi Farhad will join the University of Alabama (UA) as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, effective August 16, 2025. Dr. Farhad’s research advances passive microwave remote sensing, GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R), microwave radiometry, uncrewed aerial and ground systems (UAV/UGV), and reliable, low-power wireless sensor networks for environmental intelligence, hydrology, and hydrodynamics.

We are delighted to share that Dr. Md Mehedi Farhad has been awarded the prestigious NASA Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST) Award in 2023. This recognition celebrates his innovative research in the development of an advanced Uncrewed Ground Vehicle (UGV)-based GNSS-T sensor platform designed to revolutionize environmental monitoring in large-scale forested areas.
Dr. Farhad’s work focuses on utilizing this platform to estimate vegetation optical depth, an essential parameter for understanding forest health, biomass distribution, and carbon storage dynamics. This research plays a critical role in supporting NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite calibration and validation experiments, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of remote sensing data used in global ecological and hydrological studies.
