Fun Facts about Rochester!
  • Rochester's first public library opened in City Hall in 1865, with one librarian employed at the monthly wage of $15.
  • Rochester is the second windiest city in the country, so hold on to your hat!
  • Rochester hosts more than 2 million Mayo Clinic visitors annually.
  • Rochester is in Olmsted County - one of only two counties in Minnesota without a natural lake.
  • During a visit to Rochester in 1975, President Gerald Ford narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by Lynette Fromme, a member of the infamous Manson Family.
  • Rochester has a love-hate relationship with geese. The city began attracting Canada geese because the power plant kept the river from freezing in the winter. Over the years, the goose population has grown exponentially, with a non-migrating population of ~30,000. These feathered residents patrol the city and its parks year-round, keeping folks on their toes. Watch your step as you traverse the sidewalks downtown!
