Title: Zeta functions and random matrix theory

Abstract: This talk will be an exposition of several results which relate the distribution of zeroes of zeta functions and the spectrum of a large random matrix. In particular, I will discuss the pair correlation conjecture due to Montgomery which roughly states that imaginary parts of zeroes of Riemann zeta function exhibit the same repulsion as the eigenvalues of typical large random Hermitian matrix. If time permits we will discuss some analogous statements in the function field setting and connections with other random matrix ensembles.
