Producers must insert an official tag in an ear of all show sheep and goats, sheep and goats over 18 months of age, and intact sheep and goats under 18 months of age not moving into slaughter channels prior to leaving their farm of origin/birth.
Rules vary a little from state to state. See www.eradicatescrapie.org for more details.
The tags enable officials to identify the place of birth of older sheep and goats whose brains, post slaughter, are diagnosed with scrapie. The tags also assist in locating the live animals born on a premise that produced an animal diagnosed with scrapie.
The USDA-APHIS, National Scrapie Eradication Program, may provide up to 100 plastic flock ID tags free-of-charge, to first time participants in the sheep and goat identification program. To request these official sheep and goat tags, a flock or premises ID or both, call 1-866-USDA-Tag (866-873-2824). *You will need to purchase an a compatible applicator*
For additional tags or different type or color of tags, producers may purchase official plastic, metal or radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags directly from approved tag manufactures. *Will also need to purchase an a compatible applicator to start*
DO NOT use metal tags for sheep with wooly heads/faces/ears. This can be very dangerous during shearing.
We personally use the mini tags and applicator from Premier1 Supplies.
