All Thirteen: The Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys’ Soccer Team is a 2021 Newbery Honor about the true story that captured the world’s attention. What started off as a fun excursion for the soccer team in a cave quickly took a terrifying turn for the worse as their way out flooded and trapped them inside. With no food, no way out, and the amount of oxygen depleting, the people of Thailand rallied together along with resources and rescuers from all over the world to pull off a successful rescue mission that most would call impossible.

Reading Strategies
I will project the map of the Tham Luang cave system with cross sections from the novel on the board so it’s bigger for all students to see. I will explain the layout of the cave before reading to benefit the students’ comprehension as it’s likely that the students have never heard of the cave before or seen pictures. The image of the map up on the board can also be left up while reading to help students visualize where the action in the cave is taking place.
As we read the novel, I will provide students with stopping points where students should turn and talk to someone around them and think aloud after what happened in the novel. This will give students the opportunity to clarify events in the novel, make predictions, ask questions they have or share what they are feeling which will also build a sense of community in the classroom.
Students will use a One Sheet Book to create a collection of vocabulary words they think everyone should know to help understand this true story. Throughout the novel, there is a lot of vocabulary relating to the culture of Thailand and information about caves which give readers important details. The students must write down words they think are important to understand and do their best to define those vocabulary words using context clues, rather than looking up the definitions.
Writing Activity
Reading Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.3 – Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in a text (e.g, through examples or anecdotes).
Writing Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.3 – Use narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
Activity: Students will write narratives from the point of view of one of the boys on the Wild Boars soccer team while they were trapped in the cave. Students must use descriptive details to give anyone reading it a clear visual of what is going on and use well-structured event sequences, so a reader can relay the order of events. Students may also include relevant dialogue or internal thoughts to make a reader understand how the boy is feeling.
