A Personal Learning Network or PLN is the community of people and resources educators look to for inspiration and guidance. The field of education is constantly evolving and it is important teachers themselves are life long learners. PLNs can include a variety of professional resources such as: other teachers in your school, teaching conferences, even online Blogs!
A personal learning environment or PLE is a way to sort and process information you attain in your PLN. An example of a PLE is making a mind map of all of the things you learned during a teachers retreat. If you struggle with how to begin your PLE the site eLearning Coach contains plans for constructing different types of PLEs and helpful tips for beginners.
So, why are PLN/PLEs important for educators? They are important because if you are actively building and sharing information in your networks your teaching and lessons will improve and remain up to date. With technology advancing quickly and new education theories surfacing both teachers and students will be left behind without strong PLE andPLN!
Blog
A blog is a easy to build website that lends itself well to perpetual updates. Blogs are often used as news sources directed to specialized audiences.
As a future art teacher I use blogs for inspiration for projects and classroom management. One of the best blogs I have found is Art Ed Guru. My reflections include a summary of the site and my own input!
Curation Tool
Pinterest is a site that allows teachers to quickly acquire new ideas and skills. I have set up boards designated specifically for getting the most of Active Boards.
My Pinterest contains many helpful links for teachers just starting out with Active Boards. Here is a link to my boards.
Webinar
A webinar is a type on seminar that takes place through a digital platform.
I have found webinars to be of great value in educating both students and teachers alike. Here I have reviewed a PBS webinar on technology in the classroom!
Microblog
Miroblogs are site, such as Twitter, that allow for short tid-bits of information to be posed throughout the day.
I didn't find Twitter to be a helpful platform for sharing professional information. Check of my full reflection and Twitter account @edtech_486 to read more.
