Kahoot games
I use Kahoot a great deal with synchronous (real-time) online classes as a way of presenting and practising language.
The competitive element really motivates most students. But for those who may be worried about being ‘shown up’ if they do not answer correctly, you have the option to generate friendly nicknames. This means that pupils can choose whether or not to reveal who they are!
PREPARATION
There is more prep required for Kahoot than for most games, as you have to design the question, the range of answers, and the correct answer. However, this leads to a more effective activity. As the author, you can deliberately design distractors and make them a teaching point. Personally, I never create distractors which have deliberate spelling errors as this could reinforce mistakes, especially for those who have good visual recall.
The most efficient way of preparing a quiz is to import a spreadsheet which has already been prepared. You can then insert other quiz types later. To do this, when you ‘add a question’, select ‘import’.
You can use a s/sheet prepared for Gimkit . For Gimkit, the first column is always the correct answer, and Gimkit randomises it for you automatically. Therefore, for Kahoot, you must then be sure to select the game options ‘randomised answers’ when playing the game.
PRESENTATION:
You can intersperse the quiz with slides to present a language feature.
The quiz slides then serve to reinforce / allow recall/retrieval.
PRACTICE
As we move through the quiz, I comment on the reasons why there may have been misconceptions.
INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE
I highly recommend setting challenges. This could be for follow-up to the lesson or to prepare for the next lesson.
