Having a classroom means creating a safe space for your students to be able to learn and grow with their educational findings. A learning space needs to make all students feel safe and comfortable when they are they can learn and share their learning with others.
In my experience, we don't tolerate talking when others are talking, especially if they are sharing with the class. So out of respect. every student in my room knows not to talk when someone else is talking because they know other students are not paying attention.
We also keep a star system for table groups. After implementing the star system students will make sure that everyone in their table group is doing what they should be doing, This keeps the students responsible for each other's actions.
When students learn they want to show off their work to one another and meet expectations to fit in with the other students. My students are proud of their work and willing to getting others to the same goal when other students are behind or need additional help when I am busy with other students. Students are willing to learn when it is the classroom culture to want to learn, help other, and be proud of your work. This will want them to learn time and time again.
Procedures in classrooms are an important part of creating a classroom environment where students know how transitions will look and their routines. Maintaining routines with students, especially ESL students need a consistent environment with the same procedures to be followed so they can follow along nonverbally with the other students, This can make students more comfortable in their environment and make all students want to participate more. Every student learns in diverse ways as a teacher you need to attend to those which is easier for everyone when we follow procedures.
From the different teacher personal development meetings based on social-emotional learning, I learned different ways to manage student behavior but a calm corner stuck out to me. This stood out to me to use and apply for my students considering that they have a rough home life. My students during my student teaching have had a traumatic life. When students don't have the best home life that is when they come to school stressed and unfocused sometimes. I felt like my students needed a calm corner to get their focus regained on their learning and prevent them from acting out and positively redirecting their emotions. A calm down corner is a designated space in a home or classroom with the sole intent of being a safe space for a child to go to when they feel their emotions are running too high and they need to regain their emotional and physical control. My students appreciate that when they are feeling off they have a space to decompress without feeling excluded from their peers.
In the classroom, it is important to consider the physical space of your classroom, especially in a post-covid world. Students need to be spaced for the classroom to flow and allow students to meet their individual needs as well as their interests. This can also keep the separate groups from getting distracted by one another and make various paths for everyone to be able to move about the room. The focus is to provide students with an environment that allows them to learn, grow and be themselves.
