Introduction
Bullying is an act of misusing power in relationships or friendships to cause physical or emotional harm to someone who can not defend themselves. Bullying can take place in different forms and places, which includes home, school and on public spaces. This lesson focuses on cyberbullying which occurs through digital communication.
What is Cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying refers to when students or adolescents use their smartphones, computers and other electronic devices to harass, embarrass and threaten their peers (Hinduja, S. & Patchin, J. W. , 2014). For example, adolescents can use their smartphones to send harmful messages to their peers, and create videos or images on social media making fun of them.
It includes: Defamation, Public disclosure of private facts and Intentional emotional distress
How does cyberbullying affect students?
cyberbullying can have severe impacts such as emotional distress, social isolations, academic difficulties and physical health issues (headaches and sleep problems)
What can you do if you are cyberbullied?
1.Do not respond: ensure that you do not engage or retaliate with the bully.
2.Save evidence by taking a screenshot of the message or post.
3.Report it using the platform reporting tools.
4.Block the bully by using privacy tools.
5.Talk to a trusted adult or teacher about the matter.
