(Research Areas)

1. Energy-Efficient and Resource-Circulating Wastewater Treatment Using Photosynthetic Microorganisms
☀ Harnessing inexhaustible solar energy for applications in sunbelt regions
We conduct research and development on wastewater treatment technologies that utilize photosynthetic microorganisms, such as purple phototrophic bacteria and microalgae. These systems are driven by virtually inexhaustible solar energy, enabling energy-efficient wastewater treatment while simultaneously recovering the biomass generated during the treatment process as a valuable resource. (Keywords: Organic matter removal; Nutrient removal; High-value biomass production)
2. Multifunctional Bioreactors Through Cooperative Microbial Communities
🧩 Simplifying and enhancing wastewater and waste treatment with engineered microbial ecosystems
Conventional biological wastewater and waste treatment processes typically separate microbial communities according to their specific functions. While this approach provides operational stability, it also requires multiple bioreactors and increases system complexity. Our research draws inspiration from natural ecosystems by co-cultivating microbial communities with different metabolic functions within a single bioreactor. This approach enables multifunctional treatment while simplifying system design and reducing operational costs. (Keywords: Nature-inspired engineering; Process intensification; Cost reduction)
3. Expanding Anaerobic Digestion into a Multi-Resource Recovery Platform
♻️ Transforming anaerobic digestion into a platform for energy and resource recovery
Anaerobic digestion is widely used for the treatment of organic wastewater and waste. However, its range of applications remains limited, and the value of the recovered products is not always maximized. Our research aims to enhance anaerobic digestion by developing advanced processes, including high-rate treatment through granular sludge technology and biogas upgrading via biomethanation. We also recover valuable resources such as phosphorus and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from digestate. These approaches improve energy recovery efficiency while enabling the production of higher-value resources, thereby expanding the role of anaerobic digestion beyond methane production. (Keywords: Diverse feedstock utilization; High-purity methane production; Recovery of value-added non-methane products)
4. AI-Based Process Monitoring, Control, and Optimization
📈 Smart operation of microbial processes through artificial intelligence
Microbial treatment processes, including those described above, are highly sensitive to environmental fluctuations such as light intensity, temperature, and substrate concentration, making stable operation a significant challenge. Our research focuses on the development of AI-based monitoring and control technologies that combine sensor-driven state estimation with machine learning-based predictive models. These approaches enable the real-time optimization of operational parameters, including aeration, light intensity, and substrate feeding, to improve process efficiency, operational stability, and automation. (Keywords: Process efficiency; Operational stability; Automation)
5. Applications to Space Exploration
🌠 Designing resource recycling systems for closed environments through microbial engineering
Efficient recycling of wastewater and waste is essential in space environments, where resources are extremely limited. Our research explores the application of microbial engineering technologies developed for terrestrial systems to closed-loop resource recycling in space. For example, we investigate nutrient cycling systems in which ammonia in human urine, which is harmful to humans and plants, is biologically oxidized to nitrate through nitrification and subsequently utilized as a nutrient source for microalgae. We also study microbial responses under different gravitational conditions to better understand the mechanisms governing microbial behavior in space. (Keywords: Closed-loop resource recycling systems; Gravity response mechanisms)
