As a student working towards being an ASL/English Interpreter, I am called to serve the Deaf community. Through my collaborative and positive nature I am optimistic that I will be able to successfully facilitate communication. I have and will continue to learn and expand my knowledge about Deaf culture and the Deaf community. I value the skills required of an interpreter that allow me to be trained to interpret, while still holding interpersonal skills that allow me to have humility and compassion in the profession and to the people I work with.
My project was the detrimental effects of perfectionism, and specifically the detrimental effects of perfectionism as it related to interpreters. I was able to conclude that while interpreters should hold themselves to a high performance standard, many interpreters hold themselves to the impossible standard of "perfect". Doing this negatively impacts their mental health, which, in turn, negatively impacts their interpreting. I suffer with this mindset, but understanding that I'm not alone and learning how to overcome this has positively impacted my interpreting. I try not to put pressure on myself to be perfect, but to try my very best with every assignment.
