"The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any." (Alice Walker)
I was president of the Boston College Mathematics Graduate Student Association from 2022-2025. I also acted as a union representative for my department from 2021-22. My advocacy stems from my belief and lived experience that academics (and many other institutionalized people) are often taught that they are disempowered---and as such, we must disrupt this pattern.
Collectively with math graduate students, I have advocated for and won
semesterly townhalls, creating a public forum for students to voice concerns and submit department policy proposals
better pay, which was implemented in 2025 (in part due to school-wide GSA advocacy, but one can't also ignore the broader unionization wave in Boston)
reforms to the first year program, establishing a faculty mentorship program and overhauling the qualifying exam system
an audit of the graduate student handbook, which includes the creation of a teaching handbook for graduate students
I am also a member of my department's AI committee, comprising mostly teaching faculty. Our aim is to produce teaching materials for department use. My aim is to learn (in community with my colleagues) how to adjust as an educator in our constantly shifting paradigms.
