Synthesis of High-Molecular Weight Mucin-Inspired Polymers
We develop innovative and sustainable polymerization strategies to synthesize high-molecular-weight polymers inspired by mucin glycoproteins. By combining controlled radical polymerization, photo-triggered/enzyme triggered synthesis, we aim to recreate the molecular architecture, functionality of native mucin. These polymers provide a versatile platform for developing next-generation biomimetic materials for biomedical applications.
Mucosal Drug Delivery
We design mucoadhesive and mucus-penetrating polymeric nanoparticles to overcome the complex mucus barrier in mucosal drug delivery. By precisely controlling polymer-mucus interactions, we develop nanoparticles that can either remain within the mucus for prolonged drug retention or penetrate the mucus layer to reach underlying epithelial tissues. Our research also explores single-chain nanoparticles and polymer-drug conjugates for efficient and targeted therapeutic delivery for ocular treatment including dry eye diseases.
Mucus Reprogramming
We develop strategies to reprogram purified mucins and restore their native mucus-like properties using chemical, physical, and hybrid modification approaches. By tuning mucin structure, interactions, and viscoelastic properties, we aim to create robust mucus-mimetic materials and in vitro model systems that better reproduce the complexity of native mucus. These platforms will enable fundamental studies of mucus biology as well as translational research in drug delivery and pathogen inhibition.
Self-Healing Hydrogels for Biomedical Applications
We develop synthetic and hybrid self-healing hydrogels inspired by the dynamic and protective properties of biological materials. By integrating dynamic molecular interactions with functional polymer networks, we aim to create resilient biomaterials for diverse biomedical applications including blood-component storage, insulin storage and so on
