WELCOME!

We are excited to kick off another year of the MINT Primary (3-6) Professional Learning Community.  The MINT Primary PLC has been developed to provide opportunities for collaboration among those working in 3-6 learning communities. The purpose of this group is to provide an environment for practitioners to come together to share experiences, brainstorm ideas and offer support to each other in their work.  If you are new to the group, please take a few minutes to fill out the contact sheet below.

PLC Announcements

4.4.24:  The group engaged in a discussion regarding the mathematical elements within the casa, covering a diverse array of topics. Among these, we explored integrating our spiritual journey with mathematical materials. Additionally, we delved into the significance of the mathematical mind and its pivotal role in child development. A focal point of our conversation revolved around the challenge of aligning with public school curriculum standards while maintaining the child's connection to Montessori's mathematical approach. We emphasized the importance of observation, planning, and reflection in shaping the environment to facilitate meaningful mathematical experiences for the child. Furthermore, we highlighted the role of language in supporting abstraction, particularly with older children. A reminder was shared regarding the non-linear nature of our albums, emphasizing the importance of selecting materials that best cater to the child's individual needs and interests.

3.7.24:  The topic of the evening was transitions and looking at the process in terms of signs of readiness.  The group discussed the idea that observation and attention is best placed when the guide is looking at the child and their independent progressions.  The process of determining transitions is organic and and isn't necessarily determined only by age. When working with children who have have just transitioned, the group talked about ways to support allowing the child to build trust and become comfortable in the space.  The group also specifically talked about the importance of making decisions about when to transition based on observations of the child and the child's readiness.   Lastly, the group talked about the importance as preparing ourselves to be bold and brave in our work providing work and opportunities that the older child needs.  Look for was to expand the work that the child has done, building on their competencies to stretch their interactions with the work   Know the characteristics of the emerging plane and observe the child. Then provide opportunities for the child to explore in a more elevated manner.  Review a more detailed recap under PLC notes.

3.4.24: Our next meeting will be Wednesday 3/6 @ 6:30pm CST. The Topic will be: Preparing ourselves to support the child's transition between planes

2.8.24: The focus of this session was on classroom management: a Montessori approach. We had a lively discussion and had the opportunity to share real time examples and situations that are impacting the classroom community.  The group talked about when to intervene and thinking about observation as an intervention.  The group discussed how important it is to spend time reflecting on your needs in classroom situations and how this might impact how you are viewing children or intervening in the environment. There was also discussion about the prepared environment and continuing to evolve and create an environment that supports the emerging and continuing developing child. Grace and courtesy aren't a one time thing and need to be continually provided to the child.  Use your observation to inform where changes can be made to the prepared adult and the prepared environment to support the child.  You will find the article that was shared during the session under the Classroom Discipline-A Montessori Approach tab.

12.7.23:  Another great session where members shared some challenges they were facing around balancing school wide expectations and carrying out their work consistent with Montessori practice. Another member shared a holiday event designed to build community and build relationships with parents. The trainers shared their reflections on the importance of reflection at this time of year and shared an observation document to help gauge where the child is progressing and to aid in planning for the second half of the school year. You can find more details under the Cycle of Reflective practice section of this site. Look under planning and observation tools: Guide's Self Assessment on Pacing.   Just a reminder that there is NO PLC in January. See you in February.

12.4.23:  Our next meeting will be Wednesday 12/6 and the topic will be a Guide's Guide to Self-Assessment.

11.1.23: The conversation around inspiring young writers continued. The group focused specifically on the language materials and the progression of work in the language area that is done prior to beginning work with a pencil. The second half of the meeting focused on parent engagement and ways to connect with parents.  Two main themes were presented: How to deliver parent engagement and ways to increase engagement.  The main takeaway from this conversation was that it takes variety, opportunity, and persistence to build a robust parent engagement ecosystem in the classroom.

10.2.23: Helping children become writers will be the topic for our meeting this week.  Bring questions or any other topics you want to discuss.

9.7.23: Thank you for attending our first PLC of the 23-24 school year. It was great to catch up with everyone and remind ourselves of the importance of the developmental needs of the child in our preparation. The key takeaway was the importance of relationships and taking this time at the start of the year to build relationships with the children and their families. Also work on helping the child build relationships with themselves, others in their community, and the classroom. There are a few additional opportunities at MINT that were shared with the group.

Montessori Conversations start later this month and offer another opportunity for professional development.  Check out the link below to preview all of the offerings and schedule. https://montessori-mint.org/montessori-conversations
