Call and Response: Black Women's Use of Public Identities in their Parental Involvement

A roundtable discussion surrounding my analysis of Black mothers' incorporation of public identities in their parental involvement. In this paper I explore the "dual work" Black mothers parental involvement entails as a performance of strategies of presence, preparation, and school/class choice, while simultaneously negotiating stereotypes against Black women and children. I employ interviews with Black mothers to highlight their multiple consciousness of discrimination that informs this "dual work", as well as shapes their understanding of the relative success/failures of these public identities.
