Minnesota Ikes are Leading the Fight For Our Namesake River​

When agricultural interests responded with a lawsuit seeking to prevent MPCA regulation, they sued us, too. We stood our ground. That case was dismissed August 13 because the court found no current controversy to decide.

Our affirmative case was dismissed August 19, and an appeal is under consideration. The decision also identifies the Legislature as another avenue for securing regulatory authority. But this work is not ending—it is expanding.

Across generations, Minnesota Ikes are pursuing the next steps: potential appeals, legislative action, public advocacy and additional legal strategies. Minnesota Valley member Kathryn Kursten, recently awarded a UN Millennium Fellowship, is advancing one youth-driven initiative exploring additional ways to challenge the management—and mismanagement—of the Minnesota River.

That is the League at its best: generations working side by side, each bringing their experience, energy and voice to the same fight.
